Advanced Placement (AP)
Advanced Placement courses are available in many disciplines. JHS offers more Advanced
Placement courses than any other school in Jackson County. Experienced AP teachers
provide a purposeful learning experience that prepares students for college level learning. The National College Board has granted JHS permission to issue an AP identifying diploma.
Dual Enrollment
Jackson High School students can enroll in college courses on and off campus at no expense to them.
Career & Technical Education
The Jackson Area Career Center offers other Career & Technical Education programs that give students a significant head start on their careers and hone their work ethic for the next level of education. Co-op is also an option for highly motivated, responsible students.
Organizations
Jackson High offers a wide variety of clubs and organizations such as Student
Government, Drama, and Viking Pride. In addition, there are many after school clubs for students to participate in that cover all areas of interest.
Jackson County Early College Program
The JCEC program helps students find their way into a post secondary education. JCEC is designed as a Universal Entry/
Universal Exit model whereby students can begin their college
education as early as their freshman year and stay all the way through year 13 to a
maximum of 60 credits.
Academic Counseling
Teachers and staff work hard to
ensure student needs are met
both inside and outside the classroom. School counseling services are dedicated to supporting students in
everything from studying to college readiness and career planning.
JHS Counseling Services focus
on personalization and planning.
Individual meetings between students and their school counselor are scheduled throughout the year.
In addition, through a partnership with the University of Michigan, Jackson High School has an on-site College Advisor.
Advisement in scholarships, financial aid, applications, expectations etc. are offered through this partnership to
help students achieve post-secondary education success.
Music & Fine Arts
Jackson High School proudly offers an award winning Music
Department with a reputation of
sustained success. Over 500 students are involved in 14 ensembles and classes, and many JHS graduates go on
to pursue music at the collegiate level.
JHS conducts four concert bands; cadet band, varsity, varsity wind ensemble, jazz band and symphony, as well as an orchestra. JHS also offers one
after school jazz band and the only volunteer marching band in the county, which performed at the Outback Bowl in Tampa. The vocal music program includes two choirs; Varsity Choir and
Euphony Choir.
Students are encouraged to perform often. Opportunities include ensembles, festivals,
public events, parades and more.
JHS also offers a theater class. The drama club puts on two to three performances each year. After-school programs include lmprov and other productions.
Visual arts classes range from general art to Sculpture and Drawing.
Athletics & Facilities
Jackson High School is a Class A high school and a member of the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the
Southeastern Conference. JHS currently offers 23 interscholastic school sports.
Jackson High School’s gymnasium seats over 2,000 fans and hosts home basketball games, volleyball matches and wrestling meets.
Withington Community Stadium and Dungy Field host JHS football and track & field, offering modern synthetic
turf and track surfaces, and a seating capacity of up to 7,000.
The JHS Aquatic Center houses an eight-lane Olympic sized swimming pool for the competitive dive and swim
programs. Opened in 2021, the center seats 499 spectators and boasts state of the art technology in regards to
competitive swim. Within the new Aquatic Center you will also find a fitness center, a second gymnasium, and a turfed batting cage room.
Louis Glick Community Baseball Field is a state of the art complex featuring an artificial turf infield and lighting.
JHS is also home to the Al Glick
Athletic Center which was constructed in 2022, from a generous $10 million dollar donation from the Glick Family.
It is 53,500 sq. ft. and houses a 50 yard practice field. The versatility of the center allows for use by multiple sports, clubs and band practice sessions. Additionally, the building also
includes a rubber sprint track, new world-class weight room, restrooms, and meeting/office space.
Other JHS sports facilities are located off campus. The Middle School at Parkside features Mehall Field for soccer and Dennis Kiley Tennis Center,
both lighted facilities, as well as a new softball complex featuring two varsity fields.
Jackson United Hockey is played at the Optimist Ice Arena, and a new gymnastic center at Hunt Elementary houses the co-op gymnastic team JAG
(Jackson Area Gymnastics).
